DEEP DIVE

98,000

The forecast for US September payrolls landed at 98,000. That is the whole figure, nonfarm, seasonally adjusted, due on 2nd October per the Newsquawk preview. One month, one country, and already a softer read than the summer run most people carried in their heads. I expected it higher. The prior print came in at a thin +29,000 with July and August revised down, so 98,000 looked like a bounce rather than a floor. Why should a contractor in Pune or Muscat care about a US print. Because the material cost and tariff chatter that commerce desks are flagging for 2026 tracks closely with how hard the US labour market cools. One line from the Commerce Bank mid-year note put it plainly, naming "labor shortages, rising material costs, tariffs" as the three things squeezing margins. So we moved our steel and copper quote windows tighter for Q4 bids. The number does not prove the US is weakening in a way that reaches your yard. It is a forecast, not a settled count, and a single month tells you nothing about the trend underneath it.

Where the margin actually leaks

Margin erosion is quiet. It rarely shows up in one bad bid. It shows up across weak cost tracking, missed compliance, and BOQ lines nobody reconciled after award. Our latest piece looks at average profit margins for small construction firms across India and the GCC, and what separates the firms holding their number from the ones watching it slip. The practical fix is a BOQ margin report that updates as costs land, not a spreadsheet opened once a quarter. One finance controller told me his jobs looked fine at quote and bled somewhere in execution, and he could not point to where. That is the gap worth closing before you chase 2026 work.

QUICK TAKES
  • Contractors running separate tools per site lose the one thing procurement needs, which is visibility across orders. Enterprise systems close that gap and cut duplicate purchasing.
  • HVAC and compliance sit on one side, cleaning and catering on the other. Firms that run them through one ERP get cleaner cost control across concurrent sites.
  • The 2026 outlook calls for low single-digit growth with AI-driven data work carrying much of the demand. Plan bids around that, not a recovery.

Stop the margin leak before award

That finance controller who could not find where his jobs bled profit had a visibility problem, not a pricing one. JobNext ties your BOQ margin report to live procurement and site costs, so you see the slip as it happens rather than at quarter close. Material rates, labour bookings, and committed purchase orders all roll into one view across every project. For firms running multiple concurrent jobs in India and the Gulf, that is the difference between quoting a number and holding it. 150+ reports ship with the platform.
